1792 : Kentucky became the 15th state.

1796 : Tennessee became the 16th state.

1813 : The mortally wounded commander of the USS Chesapeake, Capt. James Lawrence, gave the order, "Don't give up the ship" during a losing battle with the British frigate HMS Shannon in the War of 1812.

1927 : Lizzie Borden, accused but acquitted of the 1892 ax murders of her father and stepmother, died in Fall River, Mass., at the age 66.

1943 : A civilian flight from Portugal to England was shot down by Germany during World War II, killing all 17 people aboard, including actor Leslie Howard.

1980 : CNN, the Cable News Network, made its debut.

1492 - Christopher Columbus left Palos, Spain, with three ships. The voyage led him to what is now known as the Americas.

1900 - Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. was founded.

1933 - The Mickey Mouse Watch was introduced for the price of $2.75.

1949 - The National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed. The league was formed by the merger between the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League.

2004 - In New York, the Statue of Liberty re-opened to the public. The site had been closed since the terrorist attacks on the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001.
